vlx active

A terminal explorer for Varlink services like systemd's io.systemd.* APIs. Read-only by default.

shell
go install github.com/rossedman/vlx/cmd/vlx@latest

vlx finds every Varlink socket on a machine, lets you browse interfaces, methods, types and errors with the docs from their IDL, and calls methods with a form that already knows the schema. Built on sdvarlink.

  • Zero-config discovery of system and user-session sockets.
  • Form-based calls kept in sync with a command line, with live streaming replies.
  • Read-only by default. Methods are classified READ, WRITE or DANGER; writes need --allow-writes and a confirmation.
  • Scriptable. vlx call … -o json, NDJSON streams and stable exit codes, and every call can be copied as vlx call or varlinkctl call.

Try it anywhere with vlx demo. The docs site has a QuickStart, guides and systemd recipes.

Writing about vlx

  1. Introducing sdvarlink and vlx: systemd's Varlink APIs from Go and the Terminal systemd is moving its APIs from D-Bus to Varlink. sdvarlink gives Go programs typed, generated clients for them, and vlx is a terminal explorer for finding, reading and calling them. 10 min read
